The three contenders at a glance
Echo Pop — the entry ticket. A compact semi-sphere with front-firing sound, Alexa's full brain, and the lowest price in the line-up. Echo Dot (5th Gen) — the sweet spot. The classic sphere with surprisingly full 360-degree sound, a built-in temperature sensor for smart-home routines ("if the bedroom drops below 17°C, turn on the plug heater"), tap-to-snooze gestures and better microphones. The differences that actually matter
Sound: Dot beats Pop clearly; the Show 5 sits between them. None of the three is a party speaker — for that you'd look at the standard Echo or pair two Dots in stereo. Smart home: all three control the same plugs, bulbs and thermostats identically, but only the Dot and Show add a temperature sensor. Screen: the Show's display is genuinely useful in kitchens (timers, recipes, doorbell feeds) and as a bedside clock-radio-photo-frame; in a living room it's more ornament than essential. Privacy: all three have mic-off buttons; the Show adds a physical camera shutter.
Which should you buy?
Buying your first Alexa, or one for a kid's room: the Pop. It does 90% of what the others do, and voice control is the point at this price. Buying for music and smart-home routines: the Dot — the extra tenner buys meaningfully better sound and the temperature sensor, making it the best value in the whole range. Buying for the kitchen or bedside table: the Show 5. Once you've cooked with a recipe on screen or answered the door from bed, going back feels primitive. Buying to fill a big room with music: none of these — step up to the full-size Echo, or wait for a bundle deal on a pair of Dots.
The golden rule: never pay full price
Echo devices have one defining retail habit: they are discounted more often, and more deeply, than almost anything else Amazon sells.
